surface coating of islets of langerhans by activated polyethylene glycol
Authors
abstract
the final treatment for diabetes is transplantation of islets of langerhans. one of the new proposed methods for immunological preservation of transplanted cells is coating of cell surface by polyethylene glycol. in this study, the surface of islets of langerhans was coated by cyanuric chloride activated methoxy polyethylene glycol. the effect of polymer coating, at two different reaction times and polymer concentrations, by immunological and morphological tests on the cells, was studied. a decrease of 47-76.5% in the immunological response against the coated cells, in comparison to controlsamples, was observed. also, morphologically, these coated cells were more stable.

Surface Coating of Red Blood Cells with Monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) Activated with Two Different Reagents
Methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) with molecular mass of 5 kDa activated with succinimidyl carbonate and cyanuric chloride, separately was covalently attached to human red blood cells (RBCs). Inhibition of agglutination by blood-type specific antisera (anti-D) was employed to evaluate the effect of the polymer coating. The remaining single cells after incubation with anti-D sera were cou...
full textDirect comparison of liposomal doxorubicin with or without polyethylene glycol coating in C-26 tumor-bearing mice: is surface coating with polyethylene glycol beneficial?
Sterically stabilized liposome is characterized by a surface coating of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or other polymers that can reduce opsonization of the liposome by plasma proteins. It has a higher plasma area under the concentration-time curve (AUC), which is believed to correlate with better therapeutic efficacy. However, the presence of large molecules on the liposomal surface may reduce the ...
full textinvestigating the stability of polymer coating of methoxy polyethylene glycol activated by succinimidyl valerate on the surface of red blood cells at in vitro and in vivo conditions
objective: because of the host immunological system response against the minor blood groups of donor, transfusion in some cases, especially for patients require repeated transfusions (such as people with thalassemia), can be considered as a significant problem. a proposed way is coating the surface antigens on red blood cells (rbcs) by covalent binding of methoxy polyethylene glycol (mpeg). th...
full textAb Initio Investigation of Polyethylene Glycol Coating of TiO2 Surfaces
In biomedical applications, TiO2 nanoparticles are generally coated with polymers to prevent agglomeration, improve biocompatibility, and reduce cytotoxicity. Although the synthesis processes of such composite compounds are well established, there is still a substantial lack of information on the nature of the interaction between the titania surface and the organic macromolecules. In this work,...
full textOptimization of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) grafting on Langerhans islets capsule using response surface method
Langerhans islet transplantation is a much less invasive approach compared with the pancreas transplantation to 'cure' diabetes. However, destruction of transplanted islets by the immune system is an impediment for a successful treatment. Chemical grafting of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) onto pancreatic islet capsule is a novel approach in islet immunoisolation. The aim of this study was t...
full textInhibition of Cariogenic Plaque Formation on Root Surface with Polydopamine-Induced-Polyethylene Glycol Coating
Root caries prevention has been a challenge for clinicians due to its special anatomical location, which favors the accumulation of dental plaque. Researchers are looking for anti-biofouling material to inhibit bacterial growth on exposed root surfaces. This study aimed to develop polydopamine-induced-polyethylene glycol (PEG) and to study its anti-biofouling effect against a multi-species cari...
